The Nun’s Priest’s Tale (shortened)
Geoffrey Chaucer · Non-African poetry — England, late 14th century · WAEC set text 2026–2030
What it is doing
A mock-heroic beast fable. Chanticleer the cock dreams of a fox, is flattered by one, snatched, then talks the fox into opening his mouth, and flies to a tree. Pride and flattery, twice.
What to listen for
Mock-heroic (a henyard told like Troy); rhetoric and dreams; the widow’s poor yard against courtly speech; a moral offered with a smile.
In the exam
Story first, then the moral: beware flattery. Mention that it is a tale inside The Canterbury Tales, told by the Nun’s Priest.
