Not My Business
Niyi Osundare · African poetry — Nigeria · WAEC set text 2026–2030
What it is doing
They came for Akanni, then for Danladi, then for Chinwe. Each time the speaker says it is not his business — he still has yam on his plate. Then they come for him, and there is no one left.
What to listen for
Refrain (“What business of mine is it…”); three ethnic names (Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo) so the net is national; the yam as selfish comfort; last stanza turning the gun on the speaker.
In the exam
Silence in the face of oppression. Pastor Niemöller’s structure in a Nigerian kitchen. Learn the three names and the refrain.
