Hearty Garlands
S. O. H. Afriyie-Vidza · African poetry · WAEC set text 2026–2030
What it is doing
A tribute poem — garlands of praise laid on someone (often read as a celebration of age, labour, a life that has earned its wreath). Warm, ceremonial, public feeling rather than private grief.
What to listen for
Extended metaphor of garlands; celebratory tone; communal “we”.
In the exam
Tone and occasion. Contrast with an elegy (The Stone, Night) so you can write about what this poem is not.
