Environment, resources and the map
Social Studies · BECE · JSS (BECE)
What you need to know
- Physical environment: land, water, air, plants, animals. Social environment: people and what they have built.
- Nigeria: 36 states and FCT. Coastal south, forest, Guinea savanna, Sudan savanna, Sahel in the far north.
- Harmattan: dry, dusty north-easterly wind, November to March.
- Resources: renewable (forest, fish, solar) and non-renewable (crude oil, coal, tin). Oil is in the Niger Delta.
- Pollution: air (generators, vehicles), water (oil spills, sewage), land (open dumping). Prevention beats clean-up.
- Map skills: title, key, scale, north arrow. Without those four, a map is a picture.
The mistake to avoid
Weather is the day. Climate is the average over about 30 years. Lagos rain today is weather; “Lagos is wet” is climate.
