Living things
Basic Science · BECE · JSS (BECE)
MRS GREN is the seven life processes. If it does all seven, it is living.
What you need to know
- Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition.
- Plant cell: cell wall (cellulose), chloroplasts, large vacuole — animal cell has none of those.
- Nucleus controls the cell. Mitochondrion is where respiration releases energy. Ribosome makes protein.
- Unicellular: Amoeba, Paramecium, Spirogyra. Multicellular: you, a mango tree, a housefly.
- Osmosis is water moving from high water concentration to low, through a partially permeable membrane.
- Photosynthesis: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen, in light, in chlorophyll. Word equation first, then symbols if asked.
The mistake to avoid
Respiration is not breathing. Breathing is moving air. Respiration is the release of energy from food in cells.
