The sentence that actually works
English Studies · BECE · JSS (BECE)
Paper 1 will punish a beautiful idea written as a fragment. Subject + verb is the whole game.
What you need to know
- A sentence needs a subject and a finite verb: “The boy ran.” “Because the boy ran” is not a sentence.
- Tense: yesterday took past (went, saw, did). Habit takes present (goes, sees, does).
- Subject-verb agreement: The list of names is long. “List” is the subject, not “names”.
- Articles: a / an before singular countable (an hour, a university — the sound, not the letter).
- Pronoun: “Each of the girls has her book.” Each is singular.
- Reported speech: “I am tired,” she said → She said that she was tired. Tense usually moves back.
The mistake to avoid
“A university” — university starts with a Y sound, so a, not an. “An hour” — H is silent, so an.
